Written and performed by Ken Harris, award winning filmmaker of "That Gone Darn Scam" a story about the renown grandparent scam.

Foes of a Minimum Wage Guard is a powerful one-man theatrical performance that explores the lived experience of an aging black retail worker navigating workplace pressure, discrimination, and survival in a modern economy.

Set inside a struggling department store in a declining mall, the story follows widower Steve Smelly, a long-time employee with health concerns who is suddenly reassigned to a loss prevention role without training.

Under threat of termination by the ruthless LP District Manager Mr. Coldstone,  Steve must confront not only external pressures from corporate, but also internal struggles tied to self-worth, identity, and resilience.

Through a blend of drama, humor, and multi-character performance, the play shines a light on:

  • Workplace discrimination (race, age, and health)

  • Economic insecurity and labor expectations

  • Corporate pressure and understaffing

  • The psychological toll of low-wage work

  • Personal empowerment and self-advocacy

This story is especially relevant to audiences in Western Massachusetts, where many residents work in retail, service industries, or face similar economic challenges.

This is a solo performance in which I portray multiple characters, creating a dynamic and immersive theatrical experience. The storytelling blends realism with heightened theatrical moments, allowing the audience to step directly into Steve’s world.

The goal is not only to entertain—but to provoke conversation, reflection, and empathy.

This project is designed to resonate deeply with the local community by addressing real-life issues many people face but rarely see represented on stage.

Potential impact includes:

  • Encouraging dialogue around workplace fairness and dignity

  • Providing representation for older workers and workers of color

  • Creating a shared space for audiences to reflect on their own experiences

  • Partnering with local organizations, workforce groups, or community advocates for post-show discussions

This performance has the potential to connect with undeserved and working-class audiences in meaningful and transformative ways.
